Rhodes: the island of the Sun

Rhodes is the principal city of Rhodes Island, the largest one of the Dodecanese. Famous since antiquity for the Colossus of Rhodesone of the Seven Wonders of the World, one of the most popular tourist destinations  in Europe combines all that is needed in a cosmopolitan island like Rhodes: culture, sun, beaches, scenery, greenery and comfort.

Its exceptionally mild climate all over the year, the island of the Sun constitutes a great opportunity for someone to visit Rhodes all year long. The heart of the island is the Old Town enclosed within massive walls. The Medieval City, Grand Master’s Palace, the Aquarium and the Avenue of Knights are must – see places down town. Kallithea Springs, Seven Springs, the Valley of Butterflies and the Acropolis of Lindos are ideal sightseeings for an one – day excursion.

Nightlife couldn’t be absent from Rhodes. Orphanidou street and the pubs, cafe, bars and clubs at the Old Town are the hot spots for Rhodes entertainment. Nea Agora at the center of the city with plenty of shops, traditional or not, offers a wide range of choices for the visitors who want to shop their souvenirs and gifts.

Popular dishes in Greece in general and in Rhodes particularly is gyros souvlaki, tzatziki and mousaka. Homemade ice-creams, crepes, waffles and the traditional sweet of Rhodes melekouni are easy to find in every corner of the island.


The city’s public transit system consists of a bus network which also connects to outlying resort areas in touristic period. One can visit the different sights downtown by taxi or on foot, because of the small distances among the sightseeing. The Diagoras International Airport is situated only 14km southwest of the city.
